Concealed Handgun Firearms Proficiency Course

The Texas Department of Public Safety has designed the qualification course for the concealed handgun license.

This is not a difficult course of fire but before attending you should learn the basics of your handgun, such as how to load it, how to unload it, how to make it ready to shoot, where the safety is and how do activate and deactivate it.

Before coming to the class you should determine that your gun will fire, that the ammunition you have fits the gun (we have people who bring a 9mm gun and .45 APC ammo.)

Range Qualification

A total of 50 shots are fired during the range qualification test. A score of 70% or greater is required to pass, or 175 points out of a possible 250 points. Easy enough...

The target used is a B-27 target, which is a human-shaped silhouette target that measures 45" high and 24" wide. All shooting is from the "ready position" where your firearm is already in a position to fire. You do not need a holster. A second magazine may be helpful but is not required.

• Shots within the 8 ring  are 5 points.
• Shots within the 7 ring and outside the 8 ring are 4 points.
• Shots outside the 7 ring and still on the silhouette are 3 points.
• Shots in the tan area and misses are 0 points.

While the shooting course is relatively  easy we do insist on safe gun handling. Before we report to the live fire range we will conduct a safety briefing. At that briefing we will cover the range procedures, range rules and safety rules. You will follow those instructions or be disqualified.
